Question
In a room with 35 men, 80 percent of the occupants are women. How many women are in the room?
Answer
STEP 1:   The percentage of women present in the room is given as 80. So, in a room with only women and men, the percentage of men present will be 100 – 80 = 20.

STEP 2:    Since we are given the number of men in the room, we find that it is easy find the number of women, if we know the total number of occupants in the room. Let’s assign any variable say x for the total number of people. Now, let us determine x.

Percentage of men × total occupants = Number of men
x is 175

STEP 3:    The total number of occupants in the room is 175, and the number of men is 35. Subtract 35 from 175 to get the number of women in the room.
number of women in the room is 140
